Much of the United States has seen brutally cold weather descend in the past few weeks as a “polar vortex” of dense, cold air has blanketed the country. Extreme cold can be extremely dangerous to people in your community, so take a look at these Top 10 Cold Weather Tips:
If you must be outside:
1. Be on the lookout for loss of feeling in your fingers, toes and face as well as any pale/white coloration on the skin – these are signs of frostbite.
2. Hypothermia is another killer – warning signs include memory loss, drowsiness, uncontrollable shivering, and exhaustion.
3. Remove and replace any clothing that becomes wet – damp clothes make you much more susceptible to hypothermia.
4. Wear mittens instead of gloves – they keep your hands warmer even if you lose a little dexterity.
5. Layer, layer layer! Double up on socks, shirts, and anything else to keep yourself warm and well insulated from the cold.
If you can get inside:
1. Weather-proof your doors and windows – it will save money and keep your house much warmer.
2. If you haven’t yet put together an emergency preparedness kit with a flashlight, radio, and non-perishable food, get on it!
3. Check your carbon monoxide detectors – damaged or malfunctioning heating systems can pump out deadly carbon monoxide.
4. Check frequently on pets and small children – only a short time outside can lead to frostbite or hypothermia.
5. Make sure to call friends, family, or anyone else you know who may be in need of help.
