On Monday, November 7th a committee made up of district patrons, parents, teachers, and students will meet to review and discuss the district wellness policy. The current policy was adopted by the Board of Education in July 2006. The policy consists of goals in the areas of nutrition education and promotion, physical activity, and other school based activities that promote student wellness.
The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 included a section on local school wellness policy implementation. School districts across Iowa are asked to review policies this school year and begin moving forward on implementing the new requirements including:
- Informing and updating the public about the content and implementation of the local wellness policy.
- Assessment designed to address compliance; comparision to model wellness policies; and progress reporting in attaining the goals set out in local wellness policy.
The committee will meet periodically throughout the school year and provide a policy revision recommendation to the Benton Community School Board.
