Keeping Pace with Funding for Education



While the Iowa Legislature continues to debate the cost per pupil funding level (supplemental state aid) for school districts here is some information on comparability in funding.

Iowa’s schools receive less funding than neighboring states:

  • Iowa funding has not kept pace with other states, and the gap is growing. 
  • Iowa ranks 22nd in per capital income but only ranks 35th in per pupil spending 
  • Iowa spends $1,612 per pupil less than the national average. 
  • Iowa has lost $641 in inflation-adjusted funding per pupil since 2008.
