Honoring Pearl Harbor Day
Gov. Terry Branstad has ordered flags lowered to half-staff today in honor of Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. The gubernatorial order would have flags lowered from 8 a.m. through 5 p.m. on Monday.
Flags will be at half-staff on the State Capitol and on all public buildings, grounds and facilities throughout the state. Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.
The Dec. 7, 1941, surprise attack by Japan on the U.S. Navy base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii claimed some 2,400 American lives and pushed the U.S. into World War II.
