Learning at Home Helps Kids Learn at School

The December 2011 School Administrator of Iowa Report included an article entitled "Partnering in the Community". There is no question that the cooperation and support of the school community is vital to the success of any school district. As Jamie Vollmer's book title states - "Schools Cannot Do It Alone".

I want to share information from this article as it relates to learning at home and how this translates into better learning at school:

Routines at home help kids learn. Kids need routines such as specific study times and places, regular meals, physical activity, and adequate sleep habits to be better learners. Kids do better in school when there are family expectations such as punctuality, correct use of language, always doing your best and finishing your homework. Kids whose parents partner with teachers through ongoing, two-way conversations are better learners.

Learning at home helps kids learn at school. Kids do better if their parents join other parents in their neighborhood, in the community, at work, or at school to learn more about supporting their kids' learning. Kids benefit from high expectations at home and support for higher education and keeping a focus on learning and homework.

Have a great Bobcat weekend!
