What
to Look for in School Board Candidates
Elections
Slated for Sept. 12, 2017
On
Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2017, Iowans across the state will head to the polls to vote
for the men and women who will govern the education of more than 483,000
students. Local communities elect school board member every other year for
four-year terms; in some cases, a majority of seats will be open. The Iowa
Association of School Boards urges the public to make education a priority by
paying attention to local campaigns and voting on Sept. 12.
While
there is no “ideal” board member profile, the Iowa Association of School Boards
suggests voters look for these basic characteristics in candidates in order to
elect effective board members.
Ø They
must have a laser-like focus on improving achievement for all students.
Ø They
act with professionalism and integrity when monitoring district finances.
Ø They
understand the board’s roles and responsibilities.
Ø They
work well as a member of a team.
Ø They
can commit the time and energy required to be effective.
The
Benton CSD has three board seats on the ballot on September 12th in
Director District 4, Director District 5, and Director District 6. Current board members Pat Stepanek, Theresa
Ludeking, and Wayne Reinhardt are running for re-election to these seats on the
school board. Please consider exercising
your right to vote in this school board election and demonstrate your support for public education.
