Performance Etiquette for Attending Fine Arts Events

The Benton Speech Team will be competing at the WAMAC Large Group competition at Clear Creek-Amana on Monday, January 18th. and at District Large Group on Saturday, January 23rd in Grinnell. Best wishes to the Benton Speech team!

The Iowa High School Music Association and the Iowa High School Speech Association offer the following insights for attending fine arts events.

  • Please refrain from talking during the performance.
  • Please turn off/silence all pagers, cell phones, and watch alarms.
  • Do not wave to your child/friend during the performance.
  • Refrain from using flash photography during the performance.
  • Applaud at appropriate times.  Formal Concert - at the end of each selection not after each movement; Jazz Concert - at the end of each selection or to recognize the efforts of a soloist; Theatre Production - after each act/scene.
  • Do not leave as soon as your child's portion of the performance is over. All of the students deserve a full audience for their performances.
  • Do not leave while the performance is in progress.
  • Arrive at the performance with a positive attitude. Your child is sensitive to your attitude towards their performance. Their performance may very well reflect your attitude.
Thank you for your support of fine arts activities in our school!
